enon, photoreactivation, was later observed in several other organisms such as bacteriophages (DULBECCO 1950), bacteria and fungi of the genera Penicillium and Neurospora ( KELNER 1952). Reactivation of cells inactivated by ultraviolet irradiation was also obtained by means of pyruvic acid and other acids of the Krebs cycle (THOMPSON, MEFFERD and WYSS 1951; HEINMETS et al. 1954). Up to the end of 1957, to the present authors’ knowledge, no case had come to light of the reactivation of cells inactivated by chemical mutagens. At that time it was observed, again by chance (SERMONTI and MORPURGO 1958). that manganous chloride brought about reactivation in conidia of Penicillium chrysogenum inactivated by nitrogen mustard (HN-2). Some of the first results concerning this effect, chemoreactivation, are described at length in this paper. THE by ultraviolet irradiation was first observed by KELNER (1949). The phenom-

Modification by manganous chloride of the frequency of mutation induced by nitrogen mustard.
HE fact that a posttreatment can abolish the mutations induced by a mutaTgenic agent can furnish a tool for the study of the metabolic conditions that are necessary for the completion of processes that begin with the mutagenic treatment and lead finally to mutation (WITKIN 1956; DOUDNEY and HAAS 1958, 1960). Different agents can produce a decrease in the mutation frequency after UV treatment: v...
متن کاملAction of Manganous Chloride on Induced Somatic Segregation in Penicillium Chrysogenum Diploids.
ITROGEN mustard (HN-2), at doses which bring about almost total inactiNvation of the treated conidia, has a powerful stimulating effect on somatic segregation in some heterozygous Penicillium chrysogenum diploids (MORPURGO and SERMONTI 1959). On plating the surviving conidia, color marker segregants appear as yellow or white entire colonies, or yellow or white sectors emerging from the green ph...
متن کاملStudies on vaccinia hemagglutinin. IV. On the effect of nitrogen mustard on vaccinia hemagglutinin.
Many works were made on the biological application of mustard gas and nitrogen mustard. The mechanism of the biological action of mustards , however, remains largely unknown, and many experimental results have been accumulated to, suggest its mode of actions(1) , among which much attention has been called to the analogy of its action to those of X-ray irradiation or of hydrogen peroxide(2). Her...
متن کاملCompetition between Wild Mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under Different rate of Nitrogen
To study the effects of applied nitrogen levels and wild mustard densities on the growth of wheat and wild mustard, a field experiment was conducted at Re-search and Experimental Field of Islamic Azad University of Ahvaz-Iran. The effects of three nitrogen levels namely 90, 150 and 210 kg.ha-1 and four wild mustard densities such as 0, 5, 10 and 15 plants.m-2 were evaluated in split plot arrang...
متن کاملRubella hemagglutination inhibition: removal of nonspecific agglutination due to manganous chloride.
Nonspecific inhibitors of rubella hemagglutination can be removed by treatment of sera with heparin-manganous chloride for use in the hemagglutination-inhibition test. After removal of nonspecific inhibitors by this procedure, an excess of manganous chloride may remain. This may cause the cells to agglutinate, thus obscuring the reading at low serum dilutions. This disadvantage can be overcome ...
